Strategic Objectives


The general development objective for the Central Greece region over the period 2000-2006 has been defined as "utilising the new transport infrastructure, the region’s position near the Athens metropolitan centre and the country’s industrial base for reducing intra-regional inequalities and for promoting employment growth, mainly through the development of a competitive economy".


The general development objective consists of the following main strategic targets:


n              Modernising production, linking it to the local economy and adjusting it to the demands of the new economy


n              Enhancing the developmental role of urban centres


n              Reducing extreme phenomena of development polarity, with greater emphasis on mountainous and rural areas


n              Protecting, restoring and developing the natural environment. Developing cultural/historical qualities


The Regional Operational Programme consists of 6 priority axes and 37 individual measures.



Selected Basic Indicators


The basic results expected from the completion of the programme are as follows:


n              Support for 670 agricultural holdings


n              Improvement of 233 km of water supply pipes


n              4 Integrated Rural Development Programmes


n              Construction of 115 km of new sewage pipes


n              4 new waste water treatment plants


n              Construction of a new, 7 km-long motorway


n              Construction / improvement of 60 km of main roads and of 95 km of provincial roads


n              300 new hospital beds


n              230 new classrooms in primary and secondary schools


n              6 Integrated Urban Development Programmes


n              Support for 380 SMEs (under Regulation 70)


n              9 Local Employment Initiatives


n              Training for 2,450 individuals



Implementation Progress


524 projects have been approved up to date, their total public cost amounting to 55.5% of the overall public cost of the programme. Total budget contracted (legal commitments) corresponds to 30.5% of the total public cost of the programme, while expenditure to date on the whole programme amounts to 20.9% of the overall public cost of the ROP.


Important projects have already been completed or are now approaching completion, including:


n              "Improvement of the Kyriaki-Elikonas road", with a  budget of €3,255,488


n              "Sewage disposal system for the Galaxidi Municipality", with a budget of €3,560,721


n              "Galaxidi Municipality waste water treatment and disposal", with a budget of €3,196,634


n              "Construction of Halkida's 8th junior high school", with a budget of €2,236,244
