Strategic Objectives


The general development objective for the region has been defined as "the utilization of the region's key position and its comparative advantages in order to overcome unemployment and intra-regional inequality problems".


The general objective is broken down into the following main strategic objectives:


n              Enhancing and utilising the region's position as the country's western gateway


n              Cultural and tourist development - deriving maximum benefit from the Olympic Games of 2004


n              Restructuring and expanding the region's industrial base and promoting innovation


n              Enhancing urban infrastructure - Improving the quality of life


n              Promoting employment and specialisation of human resources


n              Sustainable rural development

a)      Rural development (viable and integrated development for rural areas and improvement of agricultural competitiveness)

b)      Interventions in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas.


n              Innovation (also includes Information Society development actions)


The programme is implemented through 7 priority axes and 35 measures



Selected Basic Indicators


The basic results expected from the completion of the programme are as follows:


n              Construction of 26 km of road network


n              2 interventions in ports


n              Upgrading of 36 km of railway network


n              110 interventions on cultural monuments


n              1,600 modernised hotel beds


n              1 industrial zone/handicrafts park with improved infrastructure


n              state-aid provided to 295 SMEs


n              25 research programmes


n              109 km of new drainage networks


n              220 new classrooms


n              1 hospital under construction


n              1,375 trainees


n              improved irrigation for 20,400 hectares


n              250 hectares of reforestation


n              state-aid provided to 800 agricultural holdings



Implementation Progress


641 projects have been approved up to date, their total public cost amounting to 70.1% of the overall public cost of the programme. Total budget contracted (legal commitments) corresponds to 51.9% of the overall public cost of the programme, while expenditure to date on the whole programme amounts to 34.7% of the overall public cost of the ROP.


Important projects have already been completed:


n              “18th High School of Patra”, with a budget of €1,531,914


n              MIRAKA-LALAS-LAMBEIA National Highway”, with a budget of €2,942,697


n              Museum of Ancient Elis”, with a budget of €4,259,563


n              “Completion of construction and electrical engineering works on Prefectural General Hospital of Pyrgos”, with a budget of €14,000,000


n              “Ancient Olympia Bypass”, with a budget of €19,204,462
