Strategic Objectives


n              Balanced structural intervention in the sectors of cultural heritage and modern culture


n              Elimination of regional inequalities as regards the supply and demand for cultural goods and services, while taking into consideration the special features and needs of each region.


The OP Culture is implemented via three priority axes:


Priority 1: Protection and enhancement of cultural heritage

This priority aims to upgrade museum infrastructure and improve the services offered by museums, as well as to protect and showcase single monuments, monument clusters and archaeological sites.


Priority 2: Development of modern culture

This priority aims to support modern cultural infrastructure and develop and promote important cultural events.


Priority 3: Technical assistance

This priority aims to effectively organise and run the structures and services pertaining to the planning, implementation, financial management, inspection and assessment of the programme’s actions and the Cultural sector in general.



Selected Basic Indicators


The basic results expected from the completion of the programme are as follows:


n              Modernisation of 90,000 m2 of existing museum buildings or construction of new ones

n              Modernisation of 40,000 m2 of existing cultural centers or construction of new ones

n              Completion of the Congressional and Cultural Center of Thessaloniki, new buildings totalling 9,000 m2



Implementation Progress


93 projects have been approved up to date, their total public cost amounting to 93.2% of the overall public cost of the programme. Total budget contracted (legal commitments) corresponds to 58.9% of the overall public cost of the programme, while expenditure to date on the whole programme amounts to 34% of the overall public cost of the OP.


The New Acropolis Museum (budget: €85 m) was included in OP Culture in December 2004 and a “large project” application has already been submitted to the European Commission for approval.


Important projects have already been completed or are now approaching completion, including:


n              Cultural Centre for the Benaki Museum


n              Mycenaean Museum Exhibition


n              The new archaeological museum in Ancient Olympia and the PiraeusAthens - Peloponnese Railway building


n              Pedestrian zone network in the Acropolis area


n              Enhancement of the Emborio Archaeological Site on Chios


n              Enhancement of the Asclepieion monuments at Epidaurus


n              Restoration of mediaeval monuments in Rhodes


n              Restoration of the mediaeval fortifications of the town of Rhodes
