Strategic Objectives


The region's development strategy defines the general strategic objective as follows:


“Overcoming the geographical isolation, the decreasing demographic trends and the fact that the region is lagging behind in its economic development due to its marginal, insular nature”


The general development objective comprises the following main strategic targets:


n              Reversing the population reduction trend and the marginalisation of the island economy by making use of technological and local advantages


n              Ensuring equal access to upgraded health and welfare services, education and culture/recreation


n              Moving the island economy away from the tourism monoculture.


The programme consists of 5 priority axes and 31 individual measures.



Selected Basic Indicators


The basic results expected from the completion of the programme are as follows:


n              100 km provincial - local road construction


n              6 interventions in the region's main ports


n              3 new waste water treatment plants


n              1 new landfill site



n              Upgrading/expansion of 3 prefectural hospitals


n              72 interventions in primary and secondary education


n              5 integrated programmes in urban areas


n              Support for 100 tourist enterprises


n              Support for 129 manufacturing enterprises


n              4 tele-medicine services in public hospitals and health centres


n              550 investments in agricultural holdings


n              Capacity (dams, reservoirs): 2 million m3


n              4  Integrated Rural Development Programmes



Implementation Progress


231 projects have been approved up to date, their total public cost amounting to 75.4% of the overall public cost of the programme. Total budget contracted (legal commitments) corresponds to 37.3% of the total public cost of the programme, while expenditure to date on the whole programme amounts to 19.1% of the overall public cost of the ROP.


Important projects are now approaching completion, including:


n              Chios city bypass”, with a budget of €3.4 million


n              “Creation of passenger terminals at the Chios port”, with a budget of €1 million


n              Pythagoreio Archaeological Museum”, with a budget of €6.16 million


n              “Roman aqueduct in Moria”, with a budget of €1.9 million
