Strategic Objectives

 

n              Railways: The railway transport development strategy is implemented with funds from the Cohesion Fund, the Regional Operational Programmes and the European Investment Bank. The main aim of the strategy is to complete the national railway line Patra - Athens – Eidomeni –Promaxonas, and to link it to the country's main ports (Patra, Piraeus, Thessaloniki) and the European railway network.

The 2000-2006 operating programme aims at modernising OSE (Hellenic Railway Organisation) and turning it into a contemporary, viable enterprise that is capable of meeting the demands of the new competitive environment in the transport market.  Another priority is the improvement of sections of the Athens-Thesaloniki-Eidomeni rail route so as to turn it into a high-speed railway.

 

n        Public transport:

-  The development of the suburban railway in the wider Athens region.

-  Improvement of public means of transport by redesigning the urban transport network and constructing the relevant infrastructure. This new design aims at ensuring interoperability and at developing combined transport systems in urban areas.

 

n        Air transport: Improve the country's links to other EU Member States and the rest of Europe by upgrading selected airports of major importance:

-  The Macedonia International Airport of Thessaloniki

-  The Heraklion airport

 

 

Selected Basic Indicators

 

The basic results expected from the completion of the programme are as follows:

 

n        105 new offices offering computerised ticket reservation

 

n        Completion of a 369 km double track electrified rail line, with signaling and remote traffic control

 

n        Construction of a 32 km double track electrified rail line, with signaling and remote traffic control (suburban railway)

 

n        Construction of the Acharnes Railway Centre

 

n        24 km tram line

 

n        Upgrading of 22 ISAP (Athens-Piraeus Electric Railway) stations

 

n        600 new buses added to the OASA (Athens Urban Transport Organisation) fleet

            

Implementation Progress

60 projects have been approved up to date, their total public cost amounting to 64% of the overall public cost of the programme. Total budget contracted (legal commitments) corresponds to 44.1% of the total public cost of the programme, while expenditure across to date amounts to 29.1% of the overall public cost of the OP.

 

Important projects have already been completed or are now approaching completion, including:

 

n        Project "Construction of a new railway line linking the Acharnes Railway Centre (ARC) and the Spata airport": the construction of the railway line, with electrification, has been completed, while the works at the ARC are still underway. The section linking the Athens Railway Station (Larissa station) to the airport is already in operation.

 

n        Project "Construction work for the development of a modern railway in the greater part of the Athens area", with a budget of 312,265,346 euro, is already open to the public and some remaining works and accreditations are pending for the project to be fully completed

 

n        Construction works in 21 out of 22 ISAP stations has also been completed. The project's total budget amounts to 86,831,607 euro (for 22 stations)
