 Strategic Objectives

 

The operational programme consists of an integrated group of cohesive measures and actions which aim to improve the educational system and its services so that it will meet current needs, while establishing channels of communication and links with the labour market.

 

The programme’s objectives are expressed through four key axes directly linked to the European Social Fund main policy fields (pillars) and which support interventions related to:

 

n        The promotion of equal opportunities in the labour market (Axis 1: aimed at persons threatened with social exclusion).

 

n        The promotion and improvement of education and vocational training as part of lifelong education (Axis 2).

 

n        The development and promotion of young people’s entrepreneurship and adaptability (Axis 3).

 

n        The improvement of women’s access to the job market (Axis 4).

 

These axes are supported by two more axes concerning interventions on infrastructure and equipment (Axis 5: co-financed by the ERDF) and technical assistance actions (Axis 6).

 

Selected Basic Indicators

The basic results expected from the completion of the programme are as follows:

 

n        30,000 adults will benefit from training programmes.

 

n        70,000 schoolchildren will benefit from cultural activities.

 

n        7,000 teachers will receive training in special needs education programmes.

 

n        250,000 schoolchildren will participate in Tutoring programmes.

 

n        260,000 primary, secondary and vocational school teachers will attend training programmes.

 

n        35,000 university and college students will benefit from entrepreneurship and innovative applications programmes in vocational education and initial vocational training.

 

n        700 intervention programmes to promote gender equality

 

n        various educational equipment for higher education establishments (32 universities and technical education institutes)

 

n        equipment for 34 main libraries of higher education establishments

 

n        1,700 workshops, laboratories and teaching aids at primary and secondary school level

 

Implementation Progress

1,569 projects have been approved up to date, their total public cost amounting to 65.8% of the overall public cost of the programme. Total budget contracted (legal commitments) corresponds to 57.4% of the overall public cost of the programme, while expenditure to date on the whole programme amounts to 36.1% of the overall public cost of the OP.

 

Important projects have already been completed or are now approaching completion, including:

 

n        3,788 all-day primary schools

 

n        1,780 all-day nursery schools

 

n        14,800 schools evaluated regarding educational means

 

n        17 Environmental Education Centres already in operation

 

n        Greek Open University programmes running

 

n        3 entrepreneurship encouragement programmes

 

n        12 new higher education extension departments

 

n        34 liaison offices in universities and technical education institutes

 

n        4 second chance schools have been equipped
